He seems to be finding his way around. Has killed some beasties, found some loot. I suppose it helps that he has played Baldur's Gate and other RPG games a lot. But his serious lack of computer skills doesn't help at all.
Ugh, I hated that mod. QuestHelper is really nice but far far too computer intensive.
I considered linking Jame's leveling guide, but it's hard to really learn when following a guide in a lot of ways. Hell, when I started, even after being on EverQuest for 7+ years, I wasn't the player I am today.
Quest Helper also messes with some quests and causes problems, especially timed quests. It causes a lot of auto-failures. Jame's leveling guide is fantastic but it only starts at 30 or 40 for Alliance, which is great if you know how to get to those levels on your own. Using his guide I leveled twice as fast as I did without it and had all the rep and everything else I would need.
Actually it's updated since BC for both horde and alliance. It starts at 30 for alliance and 20 for horde now too.
I have never had questhelper mess up on me, but I have only messed around with it for, maybe, two months. My real problem with it is just that it is SUCH a memory hog. It causes a little bit of lag at times for me and I have a nice system. THAT is why I wouldn't recommend it. I just tried it after it being recommended for a long time. I would probably uninstall it if I wasn't leveling a hunter right now, but honestly, I've leveled 5 other 70s, at this point, and know what and where to go just fine. It'll probably get removed soon, as will TourGuide.
The main issue with quest helper it seems has been with timed quests. I've never used it myself but hearing what you're saying about it being a memory hog makes me want to try it even less.
It does a lot of dotted lines pointing you to quests (and pointing you to what quest you "should" go to next, which I don't always agree with since I stack quests differently usually). I am leveling my hunter super slow right now for faction sake, since I'd like to get her a wolf, but I don't think there's any way to do it on horde side before 30 (while it's been proven possible on alliance side). Although, maybe, if I started on factioning earlier than early 20s... (but I started the character when it was 40).
I keep forgetting to disable it on my main, so it really does cause noticeably more lag when I'm in BT. I have enough power in my beast that I don't lag at all in BT, except at the demon bursts on Illidan, with all the graphics turned up. But I wonder if I'd not lag on the bursts without it or not. I don't remember if we were on Illidan or not when I installed it.
I will miss it pointing me to the quest and making it super mindlessly easy. Also when you hover over something that drops what I need, it tells me. I probably will just try it enabled on my main, basically, as all I do with her are dailies.......sometimes. Prot pallies do dailies slow.
The problem with WoW is that the levelling game is not the same as the capped game. I play for what I do in the endgame, not for levelling. I HATE levelling, so anything that really smooths it out works nicely for me >.>
Me too, me too. I'm a raider. I like grouping *at end game and with my guild* too, but mostly I play for raiding. I am messing around a little cause I'm bored and it's a hunter (and my second hunter at that, although first is an ignored alliance one). That's part of why I still have questhelper installed, but it'll probably just stay on for the hunter, cause I want mindless leveling now...
Get out while you still can? I'm only half kidding >.>
But in all seriousness, if he's just wanting to play casually the best bet is to bum around and do whatever the dudes with the !s over their heads suggest. They're fairly decent at pushing you in the right direction.
Eh, hard to explain a lot of it, but I geek out on it. If he (or you on his account) want help, feel free to create horde on Baelgun and look for Sabelle or Issrie (my current alt of the moment).
But I know a bunch of others play too on other servers anyway. I thought Daddygod did?
