You can probably get a used guitar for cheap, and lessons around here are actually affordable. But I got a guy to teach me for free years ago, even though I ended up paying him with fringe benefits.

GuitarNoise.com has great, idiotproof beginner lessons, and cheap starter guitars can be pretty good (look for the brand Vintage, for example).
