Mother-in-Law called around 1:30, frantically telling us that TMF had to get to her house, NOW, because a bike he was going to sell in the family yard sale had been stolen.

He rushed over, I found a shirt and followed. The cops were there when I got there. Apparently Mom had been going out to the shop for something when she heard some noises behind it. She walked around the corner in time to see a blue pickup with the bike in the back, tear off down an access road to a busy road. The backyard opens onto this road, although there's a fence. I figure he's fairly local, and drives that road frequently.

Some people....I swear.

TMF's taking this better than I thought though. He's more pissed about the fact that once this guy runs out of gas, they will probably dump the bike. The tank is locked, and we have the keys. So no more gas.

TMF filed a report with the local PD here in town. If it's found in the city, we'll get a call. I'm trying to hound him to call all the bike shops in town, in case this guy tries to part it out.

Ok this sounds silly but no one is driving around looking for the pickup?

Calling the bike shops is definitely a great idea.

Question, and this is rude. But has someone who lives in the house used to be a bit of a thief before going on the straight and narrow? I am saying this because my ex used to steal all the time though you would never know it. So my things/his things/house things would be stolen just because. I assumed it was a balance transfer/karmic payback for his being a klepto.

Well, there's a BOLO out on a blue pickup, and that may cause some pickup profiling with the local PD. And Father-in-Law left around 2:15 touring neighborhoods.

TMF did call all the bike shops. We've got the keys to the tank and the engine, he's got it wired funny, and frankly, this guy just lifted a very large paperweight. Unless he parts it out.

Technically it was just a theft, at most a burglary depending on where the bike actually was, but definitely not a robbery.

I know, I know, I'm trying to make you laugh about it. (even though I'm correct, hee hee hee)

LOL, I think, now that I know TMF isn't going to go completely insane (with all the combined stress, and now this), I can actually laugh at this now.

And what is it if they connect the gate to the truck and wrench it loose so they can enter the yard and steal said bike?

Criminal mischief for the gate. Theft of a Vehicle if the bike was just in the yard, even if it was just a big paperweight.

A robbery involves physical force or the threat of physical force against a person, just in case you wanted to know.

For him, paperweight. We have the keys. He's got to figure out TMF's wiring diagram before he can get it running. Considering TMF says he wired it backwards....
